Friday Staff Meeting
Here I am in the early morning, waiting for my body to declare that it's time to sleep. I know I have to get to bed. However, I am not sleepy yet. Cue my dad's voice saying it's just a matter of lying down and closing your eyes. Nope, not for me though. I end up rolling in bed, frustrated and agitated. I feel that I have to tire myself out first, before I can actually get to bed. If not my entire body, at least my eyes. So here I am clacking away at my keyboard, lights off, waiting for my zeitgeber to kick in. Looks like my clock is terribly off its timing.
In a few days time I'll be losing my privilege of waking up late mornings and staying up late nights on a whim. I will be employed, rather than self-employed, and will have to churn in rhythm with the rest of the world. I can't be doing what I'm doing now, knowing I'll have to be beating the sun to his rising. I can feel a subtle nervousness creeping around my bones. I'm not quite sure of what to expect. Why is this? Maybe it's because I didn't find this job, in truth, the job found me (and I am super duper grateful for this, since they're holding the position for me as I tie up my lose ends). Yet as I say this, I am not really worried about what I'll be doing. Rather, I'm worried about what I should be wearing. My closet barely holds any business/corporate outfits!
Things to ribbon before Monday, the 23rd:
1) Brightminds Tutorials
2) ACET review sessions for the English subject
3) Firefly Brigade posters/banners/designs/etc.
4) My office wardrobe
5) My DOE vocabulary
Whoever thought I'd be a government employee?
P.S. Staff meeting tomorrow!!!

An Excuse
I had almost forgotten my tea, which I had stuck in the microwave to heat up. I heard the timer ting earlier but thought to myself that I'd just get it later. A good few minutes deep into the world wide web (or maybe it was longer), I remembered that my tea was still steeping and I plucked it out from the microwave, no longer hot but still warm (thank God).
I find that this experience is similar to hitting the snooze button on the alarm. You schedule your body to wake up at a certain time. The alarm rings and you wake up. But you decide that it was five minutes too early and snuggle back into bed for a 5 minute snooze, unbeknown to yourself that the five minutes you wanted in dreamworld would really be an hour or two in reality. In this same manner, I had hit the snooze button for my body to check in on my tea. I find that I do the same to some other aspects of my life:
1. Writing
I'm at the posting tab, open, blank and ready to be filled with thoughts that have yet to be let out. But I don't type anything in. I have some other things to take care of first. I plan to blog later, when I'm done with what I have to do. I hit the snooze button. The result? The second "alarm" came too late that my entry today does not correspond to what I had wanted to write about yesterday.
2. Exercise
I know I have to find time to exercise. I had been doing so last week, taking up an hour and a half of p90x yoga, every other day. Unfortunately, there are some things concerning work that I think should be higher up on the priority list of things to do -- things concerning work e.g. reviewers, posters, event banners, research, etc. I hit the snooze button for exercise to deal with these things. And with one look at the clock, I've run out of time to actually exercise for that day.
3. Things on my To-do list that never gets done (when I want it done)
I've thought about sending out a text, but it never gets sent. I've also thought about sending out an email, but it never gets written. Have you ever skipped out on taking a bath because you're strapped for time to get something else done? I have. Putting a label on something gets postponed to three days later even if it's just a matter of getting masking tape and a marker.
What's my point here? We live in such a fast paced life that we think of a lot of things that we want to get done or have to get done. And as much as we'd like to multi-task, we can't. Our bodies can't be in two places at once. Well, I know mine can't. As I sit here at the kitchen table writing I'm thinking I should be exercising. Which is why I create to-do lists (mentally or on paper), with the item having the highest priority placed at the top, and the rest following. Things do have to get done one way or another. What we have to understand is that life is filled with options, and to choose one would mean letting go of the other -- forever or for another time.
As this post comes to a close, and as I think to myself whether I'd like to add anything more, my hand subconsciously reaches for my mug to let my lips take a sip of my tea. My tea has gone cold. I guess writing got the better of tea!
